Job description: Details:Mission and objectives:The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has an extensive Migration Governance Programme in Nigeria. The Programme includes different types of interventions, such as protection and assistance to vulnerable and stranded migrants, counter-trafficking activities, assistance for voluntary return, support for sustainable reintegration in the communities of origin, mental health and psychosocial support, the dissemination of accurate information on migration to migrants, potential migrants and communities, the collection of data on migration flows, as well as working on facilitating regular migration pathways via labour migration programming. The migration governance programme is strategically aimed at strengthening the technical and material capacities of the authorities and organizations involved in these areas, so that they can ultimately take over policies and programmes related to the protection and reintegration of migrants, with a view to improving the governance of migration in the region and in Nigeria.Context:The UN Volunteer will support the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria’s Sub-office in Benin City, which implements programs on migration governance, counter-trafficking, and migrant protection.
Benin City is a hub for human trafficking and irregular migration, requiring robust policy advocacy and capacity-building efforts. The volunteer will contribute to research, stakeholder engagement, and awareness campaigns to strengthen protection mechanisms and reduce vulnerabilities.Task description:Under the direct supervision of the Head of Benin Sub-Office, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
– Assist in analysing national/regional migration policies, with a focus on counter-trafficking frameworks, gaps, and compliance with international standards.
– Contribute to drafting policy briefs, reports, and recommendations for government and NGO partners.
– Support the compilation of migration trends and trafficking data through desk reviews, surveys, and stakeholder interviews.
– Help maintain databases and visualize findings (e.g., dashboards, maps) to inform programming.
– Participate in meetings with government, UN agencies, and civil society to strengthen migration governance coordination.
– Document outcomes and action points for follow-up by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) teams.
– Contribute to organizing workshops/training sessions on migration policy, victim protection, and rights-based approaches.
– Assist in preparing advocacy materials (e.g., presentations, policy position papers).
– Collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM)’s protection and counter-trafficking teams to integrate policy findings into operational responses.
– Support monitoring and evaluation efforts to assess policy impact.Requirements:Demonstrated interest or experience in:

  • Migration governance, counter-trafficking, or human rights.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills; familiarity with qualita-tive/quantitative data tools (e.g., Excel, NVivo) is an asset.
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. stud-ies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded
  • Policy drafting and stakeholder coordination (e.g., supporting policy reviews, meeting facilitation)
  • Data collection and visualization (e.g., surveys, dashboards, or other tools for migra-tion trends).
