The organisation has vast experience managing, enhancing, and improving navigation opportunities for the country’s waterways.We are looking to recruit an Environmental Specialist who will lead and manage the environmental preservation function in the organisation.This role is crucial to the success of a major international euro-based project in Lagos State.Job ObjectiveThe primary purpose of the job

  • The Environmental Specialist ensures that the ferry service’s operations are environmentally sustainable and compliant with relevant regulations.
  • This role is crucial for mitigating the environmental impacts of ferry operations, maintaining ecological integrity, and promoting sustainability initiatives within the organisation.

Principal Accountabilities and ResponsibilitiesResponsibilitiesEnvironmental Compliance

  • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure compliance with local, national, and international environmental laws, regulations, and standards applicable to ferry operations, including emissions, waste management, and water quality.
  • Permit Management: Oversee the acquisition and maintenance of environmental permits required for ferry operations, ensuring all conditions are met.

Environmental Impact Assessment

  • Impact Assessments: Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for new projects, expansions, or modifications to ferry operations, identifying potential ecological risks and recommending mitigation measures.
  • Baseline Studies: Perform baseline environmental studies to establish conditions before project implementation, providing a reference for future assessments.

Sustainability Initiatives

  • Sustainability Programs: Develop and implement sustainability initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of ferry operations, including fuel efficiency improvements and renewable energy integration.
  • Resource Management: Promote responsible resource management practices, including waste reduction, recycling programs, and energy conservation efforts.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Environmental Monitoring: Establish and oversee monitoring programs to track environmental performance metrics, such as emissions levels, waste generation, and water quality.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze environmental data, prepare reports on compliance status and sustainability initiatives, and present findings to management and stakeholders.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaboration: Work with internal departments (e.g., operations, engineering, safety) to integrate environmental considerations into operational practices and decision-making.
  • Public Outreach: Engage with local communities, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to raise awareness of environmental issues and promote transparent communication regarding ferry operations.

Training and Awareness

  • Training Programs: Develop and deliver training programs for staff on environmental policies, procedures, and best practices to promote a culture of environmental responsibility within the organisation.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Create awareness campaigns to educate employees and stakeholders about environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Risk Management

  • Risk Assessment: Identify potential environmental risks associated with ferry operations and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Participate in developing and implementing emergency response plans for environmental incidents (e.g., spills, leaks).

Research and Development

  • Stay Informed: Keep abreast of emerging environmental regulations, technologies, and best practices relevant to the ferry industry and contribute to continuously improving ecological policies.
  • Innovative Solutions: Research and recommend innovative solutions to enhance environmental performance and sustainability within ferry operations.

RequirementsQualifications & Experience(Experience, education, and certification required of the employee performing the job)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Seven years of experience in environmental management, compliance, or sustainability.
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental laws and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with data analysis and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of WB environmental standards
  • Experience working with IFIs
  • The ideal candidate MUST be resident in Lagos State.
