Job Title: Legal Officer
Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports to: Head, Legal Services
Industry: Energy, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure, FMCG
Role Purpose
- To support the legal department in ensuring the company operates within the law, manages its risks, and meets regulatory obligations.
- The Legal Officer will assist in drafting and reviewing contracts, handling legal correspondence, conducting research, and supporting compliance and litigation activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft and review contracts, service agreements, leases, and MOUs to ensure alignment with company interests.
- Liaise with external counsel and provide support during litigation or arbitration.
- Track changes in relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks.
- Maintain and update contract templates, legal precedents, and checklists.
- Provide legal support to business units on commercial and operational matters.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping of legal documents, statutory registers, and litigation files.
- Support compliance monitoring activities and assist in regulatory filings.
- Assist with internal investigations, employee disciplinary cases, and contract breaches.
Key Requirements
Educational:
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Call to Bar (B.L) – Mandatory
- Postgraduate training (LL.M, compliance certification, or risk management) is an advantage
Experience:
- 8 – 12 years post-call legal experience in a corporate or commercial law firm.
- Familiarity with commercial contracts, compliance, and basic litigation support.
- Industry experience in maritime, energy, infrastructure, or FMCG is an advantage.
