The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is a humanitarian medical organization that works to provide quality healthcare to vulnerable populations during emergencies and crises. Since its inception in 2009, ALIMA has partnered with local health actors to deliver innovative, sustainable medical care in over 14 countries. In Nigeria, ALIMA supports emergency response and health system strengthening, prioritizing community engagement and research to improve outcomes and save lives.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Medical Doctor

Location: Katsina

Employment Type: Full-time

Mission and Objectives

  • Provide inpatient medical care to patients/beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MoH protocols, values, and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients/beneficiaries’ health conditions.
  • Knows and ensures all ALIMA medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times, and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
  • In compliance with ALIMA standard practices and protocols, ensure rational use of drugs to ensure their effectiveness and operational availability.
  • Follow up on the evolution of the hospitalized patients, through daily visits, consultations, and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment while respecting ALIMA protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patient’s evolution.
  • Cultivate the relationship with the stakeholders to implement efficiently and ensure the Medical Quality Care to the patients, as well as to improve the targeted population’s health conditions and humanitarian situation.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Carrying out detailed consultations of patients following the MoH treatment protocols and noting observations on health care forms.
  • Working in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team and participating in ongoing personnel training (care techniques, updating protocols, etc.).
  • Carrying out the daily departmental round.
  • Examining all the hospitalized patients.
  • Checking that transfusion rules are followed in the department (grouping, tests, etc.).
  • Ensuring the management and ongoing training of the medical/paramedical team to optimize the quality of care.
  • Take the lead in mortality review and propose solutions to improve the identified gaps in both medical and nursing care.
  • Managing emergencies and while on call, if necessary.
  • Checking on respect for professional confidentiality and access to free health care in the health structure.
  • Explaining to the team and prescribing the care and treatments required, following MoH /OptiMA protocols to ensure the rational use of medicines.
  • Keeping the hospitalization forms up to date by noting the details of examinations, diagnoses, and treatments, and ensuring the application of prescriptions.
  • Deciding on the exit of patients according to the state of their health.
  • Ensure proper documentation in the patient file, particularly the final diagnosis at discharge, that will be recorded in Praxis.
  • Working in collaboration with the different doctors and supervising transfers to other departments if necessary.
  • Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, ensuring patients/relatives have a clear understanding of the available treatment options and their eventual outcomes.

Report:

  • Make the monthly clinical report to inform the Med-Ref of their shortages, to maintain safety stock levels at all times.
  • Make a monthly mortality report with the MAM and make recommendations.

Reporting Lines:

  • Line Manager: Medical Activity Manager.
  • Technical Supervisor: Project Medical Referent.
  • Line Management: Nurses and Midwives.

Meetings and Others:

  • Participating in medical and departmental meetings.
  • Encouraging information exchange in his field of activity.
  • Attend ongoing training of the medical/Research multidisciplinary team to optimize the quality of care.
  • Participates in meetings with other medical teams to ensure smooth collaboration of all departments in terms of activities running.
  • Perform any other duty as assigned by the organization through the medical referent / MAM.
  • Participating in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data.
  • Passing on all problems linked to the department to the field coordination.

Experience and Skills

Experience:

  • Recognized Medical Degree (MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent).
  • Current registration and valid practicing license with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
  • Minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in healthcare delivery, with a focus on general health, nutrition, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services.
  • Previous experience working with ALIMA or other international NGOs in resource-limited or developing country settings is an asset.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, Internet).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary teams and under pressure in emergency settings.
  • Team player, flexible, and committed to assigned responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to ALIMA’s mission, with the ability to represent the organization positively.
  • Language: English and Hausa language are Mandatory
  • Capacity to manage stress, remain results-oriented, and adapt to challenging contexts.
  • Proven collaboration skills with Ministry of Health (MOH) staff and other stakeholders.
