Job Title: Medical Record Officer
Location: Lekki, Lagos
Job Overview
- The Medical Records Officer is responsible for maintaining accurate, secure, and updated patient medical records in compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
- This role ensures that all patient documentation is properly filed, easily retrievable, and protected against unauthorized access, while supporting clinical and administrative teams with timely access to medical information.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, update, and organize patient records in both digital and paper formats.
- Ensure the confidentiality, security, and proper storage of all medical records.
- Retrieve patient records upon request from authorized personnel.
- Assist with the transition from paper to electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Generate reports on patient statistics, treatment history, and other relevant data as required.
- Support clinicians and administrative staff in documentation and data retrieval.
- Ensure compliance with data protection laws and hospital policies on medical information management.
- Participate in audits and quality control of health records.
- Maintain an organized medical records room or archive.
- Train and supervise junior records staff if applicable.
- Register new patients and create patient record files using standardized naming and indexing methods.
- Check for completeness and accuracy of patient information before filing.
- Track and manage the movement of records, ensuring accountability and reducing the risk of loss.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Degree or Diploma in Health Information Management, Medical Records, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in a hospital or health facility.
- Good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Proficient in the use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
- Strong understanding of data confidentiality and patient privacy regulations.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
