Job Title: Reefer Technician
Location: Apapa, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time
Job Description
- The Reefer Technician is responsible for the monitoring, inspection, maintenance, and repair of refrigerated containers (reefers) within the terminal.
- The role ensures optimal performance of reefer units, temperature control, electrical integrity, and safety compliance to prevent cargo loss and meet customer expectations.
Roles and Responsibilities
Reefer Monitoring & Inspection:
- Conduct daily checks and monitoring of connected reefers for correct temperature, alarms, and equipment performance
- Verify and record temperature setpoints, container IDs, and energy supply status
- Report and log abnormalities or out-of-range conditions immediately
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate logs of reefer readings, alarms, repair work, and service schedules
- Complete job cards and checklist documentation daily and submit to the supervisor
- Participate in reefer handover inspections with line operators or customers
Compliance & Safety:
- Adhere to safety standards when working on high-voltage or refrigerated systems
- Ensure compliance with terminal rules and environmental regulations during reefer operations
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow lock-out/tag-out procedures
Maintenance & Repairs:
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on reefer units
- Diagnose faults and repair malfunctioning units, including compressors, controllers, sensors, and electrical components
- Replace or repair damaged plugs, sockets, or power cables
Other Duties:
- Carry out other tasks assigned by the line manager
Minimum Educational Qualifications / Certifications / Years of Experience
- Technical Diploma or Trade Test in Electrical Engineering, Refrigeration Technology, or related field.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working with reefer containers or industrial cooling systems
- Not Compulsory, but any relevant professional certificate in reefer handling or container maintenance is an added advantage.
Skills and Competency Requirements:
- Strong understanding of reefer container systems and electrical refrigeration circuits
- Familiarity with various reefer brands
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work under pressure in shift environments
- Strong safety awareness and teamwork
- Good communication and reporting skills.
- Basic understanding of port operations and terminal safety practices
- Electrical troubleshooting and fault diagnosis
- Use of multimeters, testing tools, and reefer diagnostic software
- Ability to read technical diagrams and equipment manuals
